Abhay Agarwal

Founder and Fund Manager · Piper Serica Advisors Private Limited

A Citibank and JP Morgan private-equity investor who founded Piper Serica in Mumbai and is the only person at the firm titled Fund Manager. That title, though, is firm-level: neither the firm's website, nor its SEBI disclosure document, nor the Leader Portfolio's own factsheet names any individual as the manager of that strategy specifically.

The short version

Is Abhay worth your time?

Our read

A private-equity background applied to a founder-run boutique. Agarwal founded Piper Serica Advisors Private Limited, which SEBI registered as a portfolio manager on 8 May 2019 under INP000006749, and he is its registered Principal Officer. The firm's own website and its SEBI disclosure document both title him Founder and Fund Manager, and no colleague carries that title. Before Piper Serica he spent 1993 to 1997 at Citibank India, running a USD 50 million proprietary direct-investment programme from 1994, and 1997 to 2004 as a director in JP Morgan's private equity group across India, Hong Kong and Singapore. Two qualifiers before the record. The Fund Manager title is attached to the firm, not to the Leader Portfolio; and the track record the website shows for that strategy starts in February 2015, more than four years before the PMS itself launched.

Suits

Investors who want a concentrated, top-down Indian equity book run by the person who founded the firm, owns it, and puts his own money in it — the memorandum states the fund manager and his family have invested over ₹70 crore of personal wealth through the PMS. It suits a multi-year horizon and someone comfortable with a portfolio that was roughly seven-tenths small-cap at its April 2026 factsheet, which is where the deepest drawdowns live. It also suits an investor willing to ask one question before signing: who is contractually named as the manager of this strategy. The firm's public documents answer that at the level of the firm, not the strategy. If you need a named, documented individual on the mandate, or a second decision-maker behind them, get it in writing first.

How they invest

Six principles

Pick the industry before the company

The process starts top-down: identify industries expected to grow for the next ten to fifteen years on the back of India's demographic shift, and only then look for businesses inside them.

Buy the leader, once the moat is proven

Candidates must score above seven out of ten on the firm's proprietary five forces competitive edge model before they enter an active universe of roughly a hundred companies.

Concentration by design

Fifteen to twenty-five holdings, not a diversified index proxy. The stated logic is that conviction only comes from research deep enough to be worth acting on.

Structural risk limits, not market timing

A 6% cap per security, a 25% sector cap and a seven-day liquidity requirement do the risk work, rather than moving in and out of the market.

Compounding with low business volatility

The objective is earnings that compound over long periods with below-average volatility in the underlying business — a quality test applied before the valuation test.

The manager's own money, in the same book

The investor memorandum states the fund manager and his family have invested over ₹70 crore of personal wealth and make their public-market investments only through the PMS.

Proof of process

The call that shows the method working

◆ Documented — APMI per-approach filing; firm’s own disclosure is firm-level

Clean on the record — and precise about what the record confirms

The licence and the enforcement record are solid, and both come from primary sources. Piper Serica Advisors Private Limited holds SEBI portfolio manager registration INP000006749, effective 8 May 2019 — stated in the firm's own SEBI disclosure document and matching APMI's member registry. That disclosure document records 'None' against every enforcement head: penalties imposed by SEBI, penalties for economic offences, pending material litigation or criminal cases against the portfolio manager or key personnel, deficiencies observed by any regulator, and adjudication proceedings against the firm, its directors, its principal officer or its employees. The firm's mandated investor complaint report shows zero complaints in every month and every financial year from 2019-20 to March 2026, including zero via SEBI's SCORES portal. We searched for contrary evidence and found none.

The attribution holds. APMI names him as fund manager on both of the firm's approaches, and the address recorded in that field on each is abhay@piperserica.com — a personal address, his first name on the firm's own domain, not a function or role mailbox. It is the same address APMI's registry gives for the firm's registered Principal Officer, but that is because he holds that role himself, and the registry records a separate address for the Compliance Officer, Ajaykumar Modi. A register entry stops being evidence of who runs a book only when two things are true together: the field carries a function or role mailbox rather than a personal address, and a single name repeats across every approach the firm runs. Here only the second holds, and on its own it means nothing — one constant name across a two-approach boutique is simply the shape of the firm. The role mailbox, which is the part that would signal a routing artefact, is absent. Nothing indicates a compliance contact standing in for a manager.

What the firm itself publishes is thinner, and that belongs on the record. Its SEBI disclosure document calls him 'the Founder and Fund Manager of Piper Serica Advisors'; its team page lists him as FOUNDER & FUND MANAGER, and no colleague holds that title. But no Piper Serica document we opened — not the Leader Portfolio product page, not the April 2026 factsheet, not the May 2026 investor memorandum, and not the July 2026 investor letter, which is signed by the 'Piper Serica Research Team' — names an individual as the manager of the Leader Portfolio. That is a gap in the firm's disclosure practice rather than a contradiction of the register: ask Piper Serica to put at strategy level, in writing, what it has already filed with APMI.

Questions investors ask

Abhay Agarwal · FAQ

Does Abhay Agarwal manage the Piper Serica Leader Portfolio?
On the evidence, yes. APMI's register names him fund manager on both of the firm's approaches, and the fund-manager field on each carries abhay@piperserica.com — his own address on the firm's domain, not a shared compliance mailbox. That is firm-submitted, per-approach information, and it is the strongest attribution on the record. He is also the firm's registered Principal Officer, which is one person holding two roles rather than a compliance contact filling a manager's field; APMI records a different address for the firm's Compliance Officer. The gap sits on Piper Serica's side: no document the firm publishes — the Leader Portfolio product page, the April 2026 factsheet, the May 2026 investor memorandum or the July 2026 investor letter — names any individual as the strategy's manager, and the firm's own Founder and Fund Manager title is worded at firm level. Ask the firm to close that gap in writing before you invest.
What is his role at the firm, precisely?
Founder, director, promoter and registered Principal Officer. The firm's own team page titles him Founder and Fund Manager; its May 2026 investor memorandum titles him Founder and CEO. He and Rajni Agarwal are the promoters and the only two directors.
What is his investment philosophy?
Top-down sector selection followed by bottom-up validation. The firm identifies industries it expects to grow for ten to fifteen years, then buys the leaders of those industries once they score above seven out of ten on its proprietary five forces competitive edge model. The result is a concentrated book of fifteen to twenty-five holdings with stated position and sector caps.
Is Piper Serica clean on the regulatory record?
On what is public, yes. Its SEBI disclosure document records nothing against every head — penalties, directions, pending material litigation, criminal cases, inspection deficiencies and adjudication proceedings against the firm, its directors, its principal officer or its employees. Its mandated investor complaint report shows zero complaints in every month and every financial year from 2019-20 through March 2026, including zero via SEBI's SCORES portal. We searched for enforcement action against the firm and found none.
What else does Piper Serica run that could be confused with the PMS?
Several things, and this matters when you read a performance figure. Besides the Leader Portfolio PMS there is a second, much smaller PMS approach called Emerging Dominators Plus; the Piper Serica Angel Fund, a SEBI Category I AIF; the Bharat Tech Fund, a Category II venture AIF that announced a first close in August 2026; and the Piper Serica Numero Uno India Fund, a Mauritius-based foreign portfolio investor to which the firm acts as advisor. The firm publishes a separate factsheet and memorandum for the offshore vehicle. Check which vehicle any number you are shown belongs to.
What is the minimum investment, and what are the fees?
The minimum is ₹50 lakh, SEBI's regulatory floor for PMS in India, consistent across APMI and the firm's factsheet. The April 2026 factsheet sets out three fee options: no fixed fee with a 20% profit share above a 6% hurdle; 1.5% fixed with a 15% share above an 8% hurdle; or 2.5% fixed with no profit share. The exit load is disclosed inconsistently across sources, so confirm it in the PMS agreement before signing.
