Aman Chowhan
Senior Fund Manager and Principal Officer of the Abakkus portfolio management business, and the sole named manager of its three published PMS approaches. He has been at the firm since it opened in 2018 and every approach he runs launched after him — so unlike most managers on this site, the published record is genuinely his.
Is Aman worth your time?
The named manager of Abakkus's entire published portfolio management book, and — unusually for this site — a manager whose record is actually his own. He joined Abakkus at its founding in 2018; his three approaches launched in August 2020, October 2020 and January 2024, all after him. There is no predecessor to net out. What a reader should weigh instead is concentration of a different kind. APMI's register names him, alone, as fund manager on all fourteen investment approaches of the current registrant — roughly ₹21,500 crore — against his own work email; the firm's own client table shows 11,727 discretionary clients and ₹18,583 crore at 31 March 2026, and no deputy is named anywhere. And the firm's own register entries disagree with each other: under the older SEBI registration APMI still names founder Sunil Singhania as fund manager of the All Cap and Emerging Opportunities approaches, while under the current one it names Chowhan. Both are Abakkus's filings.
Investors who want the Abakkus process and want to buy it from the person who actually ran it. This is one of the few profiles on this site where the tenure question does not arise: he predates all three approaches, so the published records are his rather than a predecessor's. The terms are unusually transparent for the segment — the same published fee, hurdle and exit schedule on all three approaches, with no lock-in — and the compliance record is clean, with zero investor complaints outstanding on either registration at 31 July 2026 and “None” against every penalty, litigation and adjudication head in both disclosure documents.
About Aman Chowhan
Aman Chowhan is Senior Fund Manager at Abakkus, the Mumbai investment house founded by Sunil Singhania, and the Principal Officer of its portfolio management business. He is the named fund manager of all three of the firm's published PMS approaches: the Abakkus All Cap Approach, the Abakkus Emerging Opportunities Approach and the Abakkus Diversified Alpha Approach.
Abakkus publishes no biography for him on its current website — its team page carries his name and title only, and the only bio it publishes is the founder's. Everything that follows therefore comes from the firm's archived team pages and its investment-profile decks, and is attributed as such.
The firm's team page as it stood on 30 January 2023 said: “Aman is with Abakkus since its inception and leads the investment team. He has 20+ years of Indian equity experience of which for 13 years he has worked with Sunil Singhania at Reliance AMC under various roles. Previously he was Portfolio manager for all local and offshore schemes for PMS division of Reliance Mutual Fund (now called Nippon India Mutual Fund). During 2006-2013 he was based at Singapore office of Reliance which helped him gain regional and global perspective for investing in India. He has strong track record across – long only, absolute and long-short strategies across market cycles. Before joining Reliance in 2004 he was part of the research team at TAIB Securities, Tata TD Waterhouse and other brokerage firms.”
Read that carefully, because it is routinely misread. The 2006–2013 dates are the Singapore posting, not the end of the Reliance employment. Joining in 2004 and thirteen years alongside Singhania runs to 2017 or 2018 — straight into Abakkus. There is no gap in this record, and an earlier version of this page was wrong to say there was.
Abakkus's July 2026 investment-profile decks record his qualifications as “BCOM, MBA”, twenty-five years of total work experience, and past organisations of Nippon Life AMC, TAIB Securities and Tata TD Waterhouse. The 2023 archive adds that he “holds an MBA degree in Finance from Mumbai University”. No professional charter is claimed anywhere by the firm.
Career
- 2018 – present
Senior Fund Manager and Principal Officer, Abakkus
With the firm “since its inception”, in its own words; it does not publish a month, and “May 2018” — which an earlier version of this page carried — is supported by no Abakkus source. His title on the firm's 2019 site was Fund Manager and is Senior Fund Manager now. He is the named manager of the All Cap Approach (launched 29 October 2020), the Emerging Opportunities Approach (26 August 2020) and the Diversified Alpha Approach (16 January 2024) — all three after he arrived.
- 2004/2005 – c. 2017/18
Portfolio Manager, PMS division — Reliance Asset Management (now Nippon India)
“Portfolio manager for all local and offshore schemes for PMS division of Reliance Mutual Fund”, per the firm. Thirteen of those years were spent working with Sunil Singhania, then Reliance's CIO for equities, “under various roles”. Abakkus itself gives two different joining years — 2005 on its 2019 site and 2004 on its 2023 one — and this page does not pick between them.
- 2006 – 2013
Based at Reliance's Singapore office
A posting inside the Reliance years, not a separate employer and not the end of them. The firm says it “helped him gain regional and global perspective for investing in India”, and credits him with a track record across long-only, absolute-return and long-short strategies.
- Before Reliance
Research, TAIB Securities and Tata TD Waterhouse
Both firms appear in Abakkus's archived bios and in the past-organisation line of its current decks. No dates are published for either. A “Business Standard” role carried by an earlier version of this page appears in no Abakkus document at all and has been removed.
Six principles
The MEETS framework
Management, Earnings, Events and Trends, Timing, Structural. Abakkus's proprietary screen, invoked by name in the published objective of every one of his three approaches.
15:15:15, on the emerging-opportunities book
“Invest predominantly in companies meeting at least two of three criteria — 15%+ ROE, 15%+ earnings growth and P/E below 15x.” The firm writes it with colons and calls the result “Quality at a Reasonable Value”.
Timing is part of the thesis
“Good company is not necessarily a good investment if price is not right.” The firm treats what the price is discounting, and mean reversion, as explicit tests rather than afterthoughts.
Second and third players, not leaders
The Emerging Opportunities Approach “prefers attractive 2nd or 3rd players where market leaders command excessive valuation premiums”, and pursues them “at significant discount to the leader”.
A fixed cap frame on Diversified Alpha
That approach uses “a unique 40:30:20:10 approach to portfolio construction to capture opportunities across market capitalization”, with smaller companies carrying incrementally smaller weights for liquidity.
A published list of what they avoid
Chase momentum, churn, copy and mimic, credit risk. Four things Abakkus states it does not do, on the same slide in all three decks.
The call that shows the method working
The record is his. The firm's own register disagrees about that.
Start with the part that is unusually clean. He has been at Abakkus since the firm opened in 2018, and every approach he manages launched after that: Emerging Opportunities on 26 August 2020, All Cap on 29 October 2020, Diversified Alpha on 16 January 2024. There is no predecessor's record folded into the since-inception numbers and no tenure arithmetic to net out. On most pages on this site that is the hard part. Here it is settled.
The attribution is stated in four independent places. Each factsheet for 31 July 2026 gives “Fund Manager: Mr. Aman Chowhan”. Each investment-profile deck gives “Investment Team: Mr. Aman Chowhan (Principal Officer)”. Each product page lists him, alone, under Key People. And APMI's register names him as fund manager, against his own work email rather than a compliance mailbox.
Now the uncomfortable part, and it is the firm's own doing. Abakkus moved its portfolio management business from one SEBI registration to another, and APMI now carries two live records for each approach. The older record for the All Cap Approach, filed under Abakkus Asset Manager Private Limited, names the fund manager as Sunil Singhania. So does the older record for Emerging Opportunities. The newer records for the same two approaches, filed under Abakkus Investment Managers Private Limited, name Aman Chowhan. Same inception dates, same benchmark, same objective text, same minimum — different named manager. Notably, the older record for Diversified Alpha already named Chowhan, so the change is confined to the two flagships. This site follows the current registrant, which is where the firm's factsheets, decks and disclosure document all point, but a reader is entitled to know that the firm's own filings do not agree.
And the scope is larger than three approaches. Under the current registration APMI names him as fund manager of all fourteen Abakkus investment approaches, together roughly ₹21,500 crore — including a Shariah variant, an ESG variant, an FPI variant, a Select Edge approach and two personalised strategies that Abakkus does not publish product pages for. This page credits the three the firm publishes and documents. The other eleven are real, and no second name appears on any of them.
- 2004 or 2005Joins Reliance's asset management business. Abakkus's own site has said both years — 2005 in 2019, 2004 in 2023.
- 2006 – 2013Posted to Reliance's Singapore office. This is a posting inside the Reliance years, not the end of them.
