Rakesh Parekh

Managing Director · JM Financial Limited

A Templeton-trained emerging-markets investor who joined JM Financial in 2004 and now runs its Portfolio Management Services business as CIO, Managing Director and Head. JM's own website names him as the leader of four investment approaches — but the firm's SEBI disclosure document, filed in June 2026, does not mention him at all.

The short version

Is Rakesh worth your time?

Our read

A long-tenured manager inside a large listed financial group. JM Financial Limited holds SEBI portfolio-manager registration INP000008455, granted on 13 December 2023 when the group's PMS business moved into the listed parent. The firm's PMS website describes Rakesh Parekh as CIO, Managing Director and Head of JM Financial PMS, with over three decades in fund management and equity research, and names him as the leader of four approaches: Focus, Growth and Value, The Opportunistic and India Resurgent. Our metrics score three of those four. Two qualifiers belong before anything else. The regulatory filing that would normally confirm who runs the money names only the Principal Officer, Ashish Chaturmohta, and never mentions Parekh. And the licence-holding entity settled a SEBI proceeding in September 2025 — a merchant-banking matter, not a PMS one.

Suits

Investors who want a long-tenured, genuinely institutionally-trained manager inside a large listed financial group, and who are comfortable buying that on the strength of the firm's own word rather than a regulatory filing. Parekh's background is unusually well documented for this market — Templeton under Mobius, a named co-management role on a public fund, three UK qualifications — and JM Financial states it on its own management page, not merely a third-party platform. It suits a three-to-five-year horizon and someone who will read the approach-specific benchmark rather than assume one. If you require the person managing your money to be named in the document filed with SEBI, this profile does not clear that bar, and no amount of website copy substitutes for it.

How they invest

Six principles

Sectoral cycles first

JM Financial's stated description of him leads with in-depth understanding of sectoral cycles — reading where an industry sits before deciding which company within it to own.

Long-term stock picking

The second half of the firm's description. The approaches under his name state a three-to-five-year holding horizon rather than a trading brief.

Quality of business and management

The disclosure document's language for Focus and Growth and Value centres on good-quality businesses and managements judged able to grow over the longer term.

Approaches at different risk points

Focus and Growth and Value are the standing allocations; The Opportunistic is far smaller and framed around situations. They are not interchangeable.

Benchmarks set per approach, not per house

Growth and Value is measured against the Nifty 50 TRI while Focus and The Opportunistic use the BSE 500 TRI. The yardstick changes with the mandate.

Emerging-market training

His formative years were spent at Templeton across emerging markets, principally India and Israel, co-managing an India fund and a Canadian pension portfolio.

Proof of process

The call that shows the method working

◆ Firm-attested — not confirmed on the regulatory filing

Documented by the firm — but not by the filing

Rakesh Parekh's career is unusually well evidenced for this market, and evidenced by JM Financial itself rather than by a third-party platform. The firm's own management profile states his title, his 30-plus years in equities and portfolio management, his three UK qualifications, the year he joined, and his role co-managing the Templeton India Growth Fund and the OMERS pension portfolio under Dr J. Mark Mobius. The firm's PMS site separately names him as the leader of four investment approaches and gives SEBI registration INP000008455, which APMI's register confirms was granted on 13 December 2023.

What we cannot show you is the confirmation that matters most. JM Financial's SEBI disclosure document, dated 9 June 2026, is the regulatory filing in which a portfolio manager sets out who runs the business. It names one person — Ashish Chaturmohta, as Principal Officer. The name Parekh appears nowhere in it. Nor is there an APMI route around this: unlike most managers on this site, JM Financial has no entries in APMI's IA Insight report tool, so there is no independent, strategy-level record naming a fund manager.

None of that contradicts the firm's claim. A Principal Officer and a strategy's portfolio manager are different roles, and a disclosure document is not obliged to name every manager. But it does mean the attribution here rests on one source — the firm's own marketing — where elsewhere on this site it rests on two or three. Treat it accordingly and ask JM Financial to confirm his mandate in writing.

Questions investors ask

Rakesh Parekh · FAQ

What does Rakesh Parekh manage?
JM Financial's PMS website names him as the leader of four investment approaches: Focus, Growth and Value, The Opportunistic and India Resurgent. Our metrics score the first three. All four sit inside JM Financial Limited, which holds SEBI portfolio-manager registration INP000008455.
Why does this profile flag his attribution?
Because the two sources disagree in emphasis. JM Financial's marketing website names him on four strategies. JM Financial's SEBI disclosure document, dated 9 June 2026, names only Ashish Chaturmohta as Principal Officer and does not mention Parekh anywhere in the document. The website claim is the firm's own and we have no reason to doubt it, but it is not corroborated by the regulatory filing.
Is he confirmed on the APMI register?
Not at strategy level. APMI's register records JM Financial Limited as a portfolio manager with registration INP000008455 dated 13 December 2023, but JM Financial has no entries in APMI's IA Insight report tool, which is where per-strategy fund-manager attribution normally appears. For most managers on this site we can point to an independent APMI confirmation of the seat. For Parekh we cannot.
Has SEBI taken action against JM Financial?
Against the firm, yes; against Parekh, no. JM Financial Limited was the subject of a SEBI interim ex-parte order of 7 March 2024 concerning a public issue of debt securities, confirmed on 20 June 2024 and settled on 19 September 2025. That was a merchant-banking matter and it does not name Parekh or concern the PMS business. Separately, SEBI wrote to the portfolio manager on 25 July 2025 about incomplete submission of client folio data for an offsite inspection; that matter is recorded as closed.
What is his investment style?
JM Financial describes him as known for in-depth understanding of sectoral cycles and long-term stock picking. The approaches under his name target good-quality businesses and managements judged able to grow over a three-to-five-year horizon.
What is the minimum investment?
JM Financial's disclosure document sets the minimum at ₹50,00,000, SEBI's regulatory floor, and ₹10,00,00,000 for Large Value Accredited Investors, with the minimum not applying to Accredited Investors. We have not published fee rates or exit loads for these approaches because we could not extract them from a primary source; ask for them in writing before you sign.
